KW vs kVA: Understanding the Difference Between Real and Apparent Power.

kilovatios (kilovatios) and kVA (kilovolt-amps) are two measures of Capacidad del generador that are frequently confused. The difference matters because Generadores are rated in kVA, but most loads are specified in kW. Mismatch leads to undersized or overpriced equipment.

The Simple Formula

kW = kVA × factor de potencia

Why Power Factor Matters

factor de potencia (FP) measures how efficiently electrical power is used. A PF of 1.0 means perfect efficiency; 0.8 means 20% is reactive power. Most industrial facilities operate between 0.8 y 0.95 FP.

Low power factor loads (motores, transformadores, fluorescent lighting) require higher kVA ratings even though the kW draw is moderate. Always check your facility’s power factor before selecting a generator.

How to Convert Between kW and kVA

kVA to kW: Multiply by PF. Ejemplo: 100kVA × 0.8 = 80kW
kW to kVA: Divide by PF. Ejemplo: 80kilovatios ÷ 0.8 = 100kVA
