Maybe. Whether you need a meter upgrade depends on your current meter capacity, your total household gas load, and the generator size you’re installing. Getting this wrong means the generator starves for fuel under load — or your furnace and water heater stop working when the generator is running.
How Gas Meter Capacity Works
Residential gas meters are rated by maximum flow capacity in cubic feet per hour (CFH). The meter must supply enough gas for ALL gas appliances running simultaneously — not just the generator.
| Meter Size | Max Flow (CFH) | Typical House |
|---|---|---|
| AL-250 | 250 CFH | Klein Heim, furnace + water heater only |
| AL-425 | 425 CFH | Medium home, furnace + WH + dryer + range |
| AL-625 | 625 CFH | Large home with multiple gas appliances |
| AL-800 | 800 CFH | Very large home or home with gas pool heater |
| Industriell (2+ psi) | 1,000+ CFH | Commercial or estate properties |
Calculating Your Gas Load
Add up the BTU input ratings of all gas appliances that may run simultaneously. A typical calculation:
| Gerät | BTU Input |
|---|---|
| Furnace (80,000 BTU output, 80% effizient) | 100,000 BTU/hr |
| Water heater (40 gallon) | 40,000 BTU/hr |
| Gas dryer | 22,000 BTU/hr |
| Gas range (4 burners + Ofen) | 65,000 BTU/hr |
| House total (without generator) | 227,000 BTU/hr |
| 20kW-Generator bei Volllast | 200,000 BTU/hr |
| Total with 20kW generator | 427,000 BTU/hr |
Since 1 CFH ≈ 1,000 BTU, this household needs 427 CFH — exceeding an AL-250 meter (250 CFH) and right at the limit of an AL-425 (425 CFH). This household needs a meter upgrade to AL-625 for the 20kW generator.
Generator Fuel Consumption Reference
| Generatorgröße | Full-Load Gas Consumption | 50% Load Gas Consumption |
|---|---|---|
| 10kW | 103,000 BTU/hr | 67,000 BTU/hr |
| 16kW | 164,000 BTU/hr | 107,000 BTU/hr |
| 20kW | 204,000 BTU/hr | 132,000 BTU/hr |
| 24kW | 249,000 BTU/hr | 162,000 BTU/hr |
| 36kW | 372,000 BTU/hr | 243,000 BTU/hr |
The Upgrade Process
- Contact your gas utility — they perform the calculation and determine if an upgrade is needed (usually free)
- If upgrade required, the utility typically replaces the meter at no charge, but may require you to upsize the gas piping from the meter to the generator (your responsibility, $500-2,000)
- Pipe sizing is critical: a ¾” pipe can only carry ~150 CFH at 100 Füße, while 1¼” carries 600+ CFH
- Allow 2-6 weeks for the utility to process the upgrade request
Huaquan-Tipp: Always request the gas load calculation BEFORE purchasing a natural Gasgenerator. Huaquan-Kraft can provide detailed Kraftstoffverbrauch data for sizing your gas supply during the planning phase.
